The Improbable Dream

Bye-bye Miss American Pie, The Godfather, The Oakland A's, Sonny & Cher and Nixon. It was 1972 when Jeff Sherman and Sam Koperwas - close friends from the time they were in Little League - decided to open a store on the Ocean City boardwalk. Sell cool jewelry, neat clothes, stuff like that. They knew nothing about the business.

But the two friends had a plan. Put out quality stuff at a reasonable price, back it up with good service, underpay the sales staff, and their little dream shop could eventually earn the confidence of Ocean City's return customers... and maybe even turn a profit. Not the strongest plan, they both realized, but at least they could keep coming to the shore. No suit and tie, either.

So Jeff borrowed $5,000 from his mom, Sam pitched in with another five socked away from summer jobs and his bar-mitzvah, and thus was Henry's born - named for the cigar store Indian who still stands at the entrance.

The first few years provided a lot of good times, a lot of learning experience, a lot of friends. Not a lot of money. But the two young partners held tight to their original notion, and in time things started to click. Ocean City shoppers soon realized there was a place on the boardwalk they could buy with confidence. Faces become familiar. People came back, and they continued to come back - summer after summer after summer.

Thirty years later, Henry's stands as an Ocean City landmark. Offering jewelry you're proud to own, designs you won't see in other stores, clothing that doesn't fall apart when you wash it. If there's a problem, it's taken care of.

And Jeff and Sam still don't wear a suit and tie.

The improbable Dream continues. Now, here's another way for our longtime customers, or those getting to know us for the first time, to enjoy that unique Henry's experience - a touch of summer throughout the year.
